San Juan Hill is the memoir of a young boy growing up in the Amsterdam Projects during the 1950’s. It is a coming of age story that chronicles the lives of a generation of urban youth growing up on the crest of the civil rights movement in a diverse community coalescing to meet the future; it is the saga of the communities’ triumphs and failures filled with rich characters whose ordinary lives that are, in turns, repelling and inspiring – it is the story of how from the wretched arose the worthy. This story is told with the kind of affection people have for a childhood spent in a middle-class safe haven. People from the projects don’t feel this way - but we do and there are reasons why.
San Juan Hill Outsiders would think what an odd sentiment to hold about a place that suggests poverty and hardships, and we had them in abundance, but we seldom focused on it and we never gave in to it. There isn’t one of us who would say that we were poor although back then, many of us didn’t have two nickels to rub together. Poverty isn’t just about the lack of money; it’s also about the lack of spirit, we had plenty spirit.

San Juan Hill edition by Horace Mungin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
San Juan Hill is an inspirational story of the strength and survival of a young boy growing up in NYC's Amsterdam Projects in the 50s/60s. Faced with the challenges of intense peer pressure, racism and heroin drugs, but anchored by a strong Southern family, positive role models, and a close-knit community, a young man emerges from his journey triumphed, ready to take his first "leap" toward becoming a successful man.
Mr. Mungin's San Juan Hill is a personal journey that many inner city youth take. It is a course in Survival tempered with wit and love and should be in the library of every family.
Horace has brought back vivid memories and awareness of that other side of the projects we always avoided. We could play in that playground during the day and basketball at the jym at night but knew not to dally when walking to our building after dark. We knew the neighbors kids who were always in trouble and "on something." Little did I know all the activities in the area we called, "down the back." Local churches and community centers kept constant pressure on us to be active in something and they along with our parents were always "watching." I wouldn't trade a day in my life for the upbringing amoungst all the diversity and sharing of friendships in that setting. Like Horace, strong family ties and, of course, that draft helped many of us make decisions which formed our futures. Thank you for sharing those years with us and now all who wondered how anyone survived back then.
I thought it would be an historic account of the area I grew up in, but it's not. It's a fiction
I had read a previous book by this author (Subway, after the irish) & thought it quite thorough in explaining the workings of the New York Transit system, something that all of us had to deal with when getting around Manhattan. This book delves into the projects, some areas that we always avoided when possible....not all of us!
Great book if you like history and are a Bronx native. Quick read and interesting. Would recommend this book to someone who like stories about New York.
